How To Install Kitchen Base Cabinets

Cabinets are a fundamental part of any kitchen. Kitchen cabinets not only provide storage, but they define spatial organization and workflow for one of the most used spaces in a home. As such, cabinets are a focal point of every kitchen, and proper installation is essential to both aesthetic and functional qualities.

The cabinets need to be square, level, and secure so doors and drawers operate properly and provide stable support for the countertops and fixtures. With the right tools and a little patience, installing kitchen Base cabinets is a project any do-it-yourselfer can handle. Join the At Home channel’s host, Jeff Wilson, as he installs new base cabinets for a small kitchenette.

Installing new kitchen cabinets may seem intimidating, but the techniques are really quite simple. Think of it as screwing a series of boxes to the wall and to one another in the proper sequence. If your cabinet plan is correct, your main job is to find the best starting point and keep everything level. In this story we'll show you how to master these key steps. kitchen backsplash materials We'll tell you how to lay out the cabinet positions ahead of time to avoid missteps.

Around the Corner
Usually, the best place to begin installing your base cabinets is the corner. In case of measurement errors or irregular cabinets, you want to make sure the corner cabinet is placed correctly. You can then begin to build out from either side.

Stud alert
You are going to need to know where all the studs are in your kitchen wall. Using a stud finder, mark all the studs in the wall near both the bottom and top horizontal lines you have made. Draw vertical lines connecting these marks as a guide. Repeat this for each stud. Don Vandervort has great pictures that help illustrate these steps.

Measure up
Make sure you measure the height of the cabinets. Then, measure this same distance from the mark you made for the highest point of your floor. Make another mark; this will be where the top of the cabinet should come to. Draw a straight line across the entire wall space that will be used for the cabinets.

Not all floors were created equal
Most floors have a slope to them and this slope can potentially ruin your base cabinet installation. You will need to figure out the highest point of your floor and mark it on the wall. Draw a straight line across the entire wall space that will be used for the cabinets.

Which came first-the base or the wall
Make sure you fully plan out whether you will be installing the base or the wall cabinets first. There are positive aspects to choosing either route, but you need to decide which way works best for your installation situation. Bruce W. Maki has a handy guide to the pros and cons of both installation plans.

Tips For A Healthy Beautiful Lawn Grass

A beautiful lawn is easier to have and maintain than the professional lawn-care people want you to think. Sadly, their way of maintaining lawns is dictated by the fertilizer makers and not by grass know-how or science.

Lawns can look beautiful without using pestticides and fertilizers that may contribute to water quality problems in a local creek, the Bay or Delta. The tips below will help you maintain a healthy and beautiful lawn that can out-compete weeds and other lawn pests.

Fertilizer Tips
Select slow--release fertilizers to gradually feed plants. These products should contain little or no phosphorus. The numbers on the labels of fertilizers will help you identify which are low in phosphorus. The numbers indicate the percentages of nitrogen-phosphorous-and potassium as potash. Low phosphorous brands have ratings on their labels such as 23-0-6, 30-4-4 or 26-4-4.Fertilizers containing abundant nitrogen (46-0-0, 33-0-0) are not recommended because they are highly soluble and can readily wash away or enter groundwater

Watering Tips
Water lightly and frequently. Grass roots are short (often less than 4" long) and can't absorb the excess water. Light, frequent watering also reduces the stress to the grass plant, which reduces the potential for disease and insect damage.Fertilize in September or October to promote root growth rather than top growth. Deep roots withstand drought and resist disease. Strong roots store food produced in the grass blades for use in early spring. Use fertilizers sparingly. Over fertilizing actually encourages certain insects and diseases and increases maintenance needs.

Tips to keep Your Bathroom Clean And Fresh

Keeping your bathroom smelling fresh may sound like an arduous task, but here are a few simple tips which will have your bathroom smelling good all day long! Accept it  cleaning bathrooms is nobody’s favourite job! That one day of the week when it’s time to clean the dreaded bathroom is not something you look forward to

All of us like fresh smelling bathrooms. It’s just that it never seems to stay that way for long.  Read on for a few time-saving tips to keep your bathroom fragrant, that too effortlessly!

Where the bathroom is concerned, the sweet smell of cleaning success is no smell at all. That can be a challenge, though. keep your bathrooms are ground zero for some of the dirtiest and most pungently odiferous activities in your home.

One of the challenges of keeping your bathroom fresh and tidy is that there's lots of dirty business being done in there, which makes maintaining it one of the more tiresome tasks in household management. Fortunately, most bathroom surfaces are pretty easy to clean, especially if you make a point to do it on a regular basis. Daily maintenance and a weekly deep cleaning will give you the freshest bathroom in the 'hood.

Start Fresh
First of all, you'll need to give your bathroom a full scrub-down. I'm talking the works- ceiling to floor. This would include wiping grime off the baseboards, vanity cabinets, behind the toilet, dusting the light fixtures and washing the rugs. Make everything sparkle from top to bottom. Tired, aren't you? It's hard work cleaning a bathroom that is overdue. Be sure to put some air freshener out.

Keep Up Appearances
Now that you've done a deep cleaning on your bathroom and detailed everything, here are the real tips. You have a clean bathroom, but the goal is to keep it clean enough that you don't have to go through a crazy half-hour, full on cleaning job every two weeks.

Daily
Spray your shower with a daily shower spray of your choice. Tilex is a good one, but there are other brands out there too. If you have glass doors on your shower, be sure to squeegee them down really quick so they don't get all cloudy.Keep some Windex Wipes or a bottle of Windex under your vanity and each evening (perhaps after your bedtime routine) simply wipe any smudges or water stains from the mirrors and faucet. The wipes are very handy because you don't need a paper towel.

Weekly
  • Take out the trash and clean the toilet with some bleach if it needs it.
  • Scrub your sink if it's become dirty or lost its shine.
  • Replace the towels.
  • Spray the rugs with some fabric refresher.
Monthly
  • Clean up the shower a little more, if it's noticeably soiled or you haven't been consistent with your daily spray/squeegee routine.
  • Shake out the rugs. I recommend throwing them in the washer every 2 months to keep them fresh and fluffed.
  • Replace the gel cleaner in your toilet- all you have to do is stick it on.
  • Dust down any areas that look a little grimy.
  • I also recommend cleaning out your trashcan or throwing some baking soda or air freshener into it.
  • Clean up the floors with a mop or wipe as well.

The Benefits of Laminate Flooring For Your Home

If you didn’t know, laminate flooring is actually one of the most used types of flooring in homes and businesses around the world and that is due to the many advantages it has compared to other flooring solutions out there. If you want to consider this type of flooring in the future and want to know about it before you take the step, below you will be able to read more about its benefits.

One of the most sought after amenities in a home is wood flooring.  From its natural appearance and warmth underfoot, wood is beautiful and timeless.  Older traditional homes with their original hardwood floors are one of the pros of buying older homes.  Newer homes that have a lower price point, but that still want the natural look of wood use laminate to win home buyers over.

One of the most attractive attributes of laminate flooring your home is the price. Although this type of flooring looks just like hardwood flooring, it is much cheaper. Laminate also doesn't require the maintenance of hardwood or carpeting. Hardwood floors have to be refinished every so often, and carpets must be cleaned regularly.

The low price of laminate flooring also usually includes an extensive warranty. Warranties range from 10 to 25 years just in case something happens to the floor. This is usually not an issue because another benefit of this kind of flooring is the durability.

Laminate flooring benefits your wallet better than any other flooring option on the market. It is less than half the price of hardwood and cheaper than carpet. It will also save you money in the long run because you won’t need to replace it for years luxury home interior decor Unlike hardwood, marble or carpet, laminate flooring does not fade in the sunlight and is resistant to stains, impacts and scratches. This is due to the incredibly durable melamine plastic wear layer laminate flooring manufacturers use for the top surface of laminate floors.

One obvious advantage is that of price; laminate flooring is typically half the cost of traditional hardwood flooring. Sometimes the savings are even greater, depending on the types of flooring in question. This is due to the nature of the product, laminate is an image printed on wood, whereas solid wood is a whole block of wood, much better quality wood. It requires different treatments and finishes.

Laminate Flooring boasts the warmth, character and richness of traditional timber flooring. You can choose from 20 contemporary colours, grain patterns and finishes, including a classic V-groove look. Depending on your needs, you can also select from two different ranges - Laminate in 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, and Supergloss in 10mm. The 12mm option is thicker than most other laminate flooring products available in Australia. And has a pre-adhered sound suppressing underlay for minimal foot noise.
